My daughter has finished her first year of school and can’t quite fathom what’s going on. She was in full-time montessori before school. With lengthy days which embraced no season. So the novelty of this freedom is sweet.
“Is there school tomorrow?”
“No.”
“The day after?”
“No.”
“The day after that?”
“No”
And on and on. “How does the sky change colour?”
“I don’t know.”
“Can I have an ice-pop?”
“No, it’s 9am.”
And on and on.
I’m taking this opportunity to embrace seasonality myself. Not simply to parent, although there will be a lot of that. But also, to make things. I’ve gotten a residency. A free studio space, it’s actually catered and has childcare. I know, unbelievable. It’s my mum’s box room. It’s genuinely the best studio I’ve ever had. She comes in with porridge in the morning. And there isn’t a mouldy mug to be seen. I haven’t yet taught her how to clean my brushes but she should know that’s coming down the line (jk mother).
So, I’ll be putting the newsletter on hold for the summer. I’ve paused any payments. Thank you so much for your support. I’m also going to take this time to plan and implement some of the changes I’ve been considering. And hopefully come back better in September.
Alongside making art and the incessant provision of snacks. I’ve a few other things going on this summer.
— An ongoing art class in Segotia, a beautiful new art & yoga studio in Rathmines. Learn about it here. It’s a mix of life drawing and drawing exercises. Although you can use whatever medium you like. I’m learning loads and some of the students say they’re enjoying it too! Mondays @ 6.45 in Segotia, Rathmines.
— The Connecting Artists 2025 Exhibition. I mentored a lovely artist called Rachel for this upcoming exhibition. The Connections Art Centre is a programme which promotes the inclusion of adults with disabilities. Rachel’s work is fantastic, well worth a visit. It’s on at the Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin from the 16th July-19th July.
— I was selected to be part of the Collision Project 2025, a collaboration facilitation project which pairs two artists. I’ve been collaborating with talented artist and writer Sarah Long. The exhibition opening is on Friday, 18th July, from 6 - 8pm at @starling__starling in Limerick. And it will run until the 26th July.
— Lastly, I have a piece in the 195th RHA Annual Exhibition, Dublin. It’s on until the 3rd of August and if you like my work, this piece is a steal because I had no idea what I was doing when I priced it.
Thanks for being here <3 If you’re an artist and you want to be featured in this newsletter, get in touch. You can reply to this email. It’s been lovely writing to you. Chat soon.
Lots of love,
Kate
